Types of Sports Certificate

• Placement — first, second, and third. The obvious one, and the easiest to award.
• Participation — everyone who took part. Worth more than people assume for younger children and for events where finishing was the achievement.
• Team awards — player of the season, most improved player, players’ player, coach’s award, best newcomer.
• Personal achievement — a personal best, a distance swum, a first goal, a time beaten. These can go to any number of people and don’t depend on beating anyone else.
• Commitment and attendance — a full season without missing a session is a real achievement, particularly for a child who relies on someone else for lifts.
• Sportsmanship and fair play — for how someone played rather than how well. The award most worth having and the one most often left out.

Balance the Awards

Worth saying plainly, because it shapes what you print: the certificates that matter most usually aren’t the placement ones.

First place goes to the child who was already good at it, already knew they were good at it, and will be fine either way. The awards that actually change something — most improved, sportsmanship, effort, commitment — reach the child who finished last every week and came back anyway, or who stopped to help an opponent up, or who has quietly got much better without anyone mentioning it.

That isn’t an argument against competitive awards. Winning should be recognized, and children know when an award has been manufactured for them. It’s an argument for printing more than three certificates: a placement set for the results, and a handful of others chosen deliberately so that the recognition doesn’t land entirely on the same three children it always lands on.

For a season’s end, a reasonable mix for a squad of fifteen might be three placement or team awards, one most improved, one sportsmanship, one coach’s award, and a participation certificate for everyone. That’s twenty minutes of printing and it changes the feel of the evening.

Name the Specific Thing

The difference between a certificate that goes in a drawer and one that goes on a wall is usually a single line.

“Player of the Season” is a title. “Player of the Season — for never missing a training session, and for playing three different positions when we were short” is a description of a person, and that’s what gets kept.

It takes thirty seconds per certificate and it requires you to have noticed something, which is rather the point. If you can’t think of anything specific to write for a particular child, that’s worth knowing before the presentation rather than during it.

Sports Certificate Example

Three sentences in the middle, and they do all the work. A certificate reading only “Most Improved Player” would have been correct and forgotten; this one records what actually happened, which is what the player’s family will read out loud.

Sports Day Logistics

The certificates are usually the easy part; the printing on the morning is not. A few things that save time:

• Print blanks in advance. Crest, event name, date and signature already on the sheet, with the name and placement left empty. On the day you’re filling in gaps rather than running a printer between races.
• Find someone with neat handwriting and let them do all the names. Nothing spoils a certificate faster than four different hands and one biro running out.
• Print more than you need — at least 20% over. Names get misspelled, children appear who weren’t on the list, and a spare stack costs almost nothing.
• Check the name list against the register, not against memory or a sign-up sheet from March.
• Sort into piles by class or race before the presentation, in the order they’ll be called.
• Take spare pens — the same colour, so the certificates match.

For a club presentation evening, our agenda templates help keep the running order to time, and event tickets suit a ticketed end-of-season event.

Presenting Them

• Check name pronunciation beforehand. Ask, don’t guess. Getting a child’s name wrong in front of a hall is the detail they’ll remember about the evening.
• Read the reason aloud, not just the name and award. It takes ten extra seconds and it’s the difference between a queue and a moment.
• Present publicly where you can — assembly, presentation evening, end of the session. A certificate handed over in a car park is worth a fraction of the same certificate handed over in front of the team.
• Take a photograph of each recipient holding it, and send it to the family. Most of them will keep the photograph longer than the certificate.
• Print on card, 200 gsm or heavier, so it survives the journey home in a kit bag.
• Sign by hand. On an award from a coach, a printed signature rather misses the point.

Other certificates in this family: award certificates for competitive wins generally, merit certificates where a standard was met, and blank certificate templates if you’d rather build your own design.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should a sports certificate include?

The club, school or event name, the award title, the recipient’s full name, a specific reason where you can write one, the date or season, and a hand-written signature from the coach, teacher, or organiser.

What awards should we give at the end of a season?

A mix rather than placement alone — player of the season, most improved, players’ player, a coach’s award, and a sportsmanship award, plus a participation certificate for everyone. Deliberate variety stops recognition landing on the same three children every year.

What do you write on a sports certificate?

Name the specific thing. “Most Improved Player” is a title; “Most Improved Player — started the season in goal and finished it as our most reliable defender” is what gets kept. If you can’t think of anything specific, that’s worth noticing before the presentation.

Should everyone get a certificate?

For younger children and for participation events, yes — finishing was the achievement. For competitive age groups, give placement awards honestly and add effort, improvement, and sportsmanship categories so that recognition still reaches beyond the fastest three.

How do I print certificates for a whole sports day?

Print blanks in advance with the crest, event, date and signature already on them, leaving the name and placement to fill in by hand. Print at least 20% more than you think you need, and have one person with neat handwriting do all the names.

What paper should sports certificates be printed on?

Card of 200 gsm or heavier. Certificates travel home in kit bags, and ordinary paper arrives creased and damp.

What is a sportsmanship award?

Recognition for how someone played rather than how well — playing fairly, encouraging teammates, helping opponents, handling a defeat well. It’s frequently the most valuable certificate on the table and the one most often left off the list.
