What People Actually Use These For

• Classroom projects. The most common use by a distance — a wanted poster for a character from a novel, a historical figure, or in science lessons for an element or a pathogen. See the section below for how the assignment is usually structured.
• Themed parties and events. Wild West birthdays, saloon nights, line dancing socials, school fetes, and fundraisers. Posters work as decoration, as photo-booth props, and as invitations.
• Novelty gifts. A poster for a colleague’s retirement, a milestone birthday, or a stag or hen weekend — “wanted for twenty-five years of terrible puns, reward: one slice of cake.”
• Props. Escape rooms, murder mystery evenings, tabletop role-playing games, amateur theatre, and student films all use them, and a printed prop beats a screen every time.
• Community noticeboards — for a lost item or a local appeal. If you’re looking for a lost animal, our missing pet poster templates are designed for that specifically, with contact tear-offs.

The Classic Layout

The Old West format is fixed enough to be instantly readable, which is why it still works. Top to bottom:

• WANTED — the largest text on the page, usually in a heavy slab-serif or Western display face, often with DEAD OR ALIVE beneath it.
• The portrait — a photograph or sketch, square or slightly portrait, bordered. Black and white or sepia sells the effect far better than color.
• The name, large, with aliases beneath: “also known as…”
• The charges — what they’re wanted for, in period language if you’re having fun with it: cattle rustling, train robbery, disturbing the peace.
• Physical description — height, build, hair, eyes, distinguishing marks.
• Last seen — place and date.
• REWARD — a large figure, second only to the headline in size. This is the element that makes a wanted poster look like a wanted poster.
• Contact line — “Contact the Sheriff’s Office,” or for a party, whoever is running it.

Wanted Poster Example

The proportions are what make it read correctly: WANTED and the reward figure are the two largest elements, the portrait sits between them, and everything else is small. Get that hierarchy right and the poster works even before anyone reads a word.

The Classroom Assignment

“Make a wanted poster for a character” is character analysis wearing a disguise, which is why it works so well. Students who’d resist writing a description will happily fill in a poster, and the format forces exactly the thinking a teacher wants — evidence from the text, inference about motive, and a physical description they have to hunt for.

A version that produces real work rather than coloring-in:

• Name and aliases — including what other characters call them, which is often revealing in itself.
• Physical description — with a page or chapter reference. This single requirement turns the task from imagination into textual evidence.
• Wanted for — the character’s actions, framed as charges. Students have to decide what the character actually did wrong, which is the analytical core of the exercise.
• Known associates — other characters and their relationship.
• Last seen — a location and moment from the text.
• Reward — and, as an extension, a sentence justifying the amount based on how dangerous the character is.
• Approach with caution because… — the best prompt of the lot, since it asks for an inference the text never states directly.

The same structure adapts across subjects: a wanted poster for sodium (wanted for violent reactions with water, last seen in group 1), for a pathogen, for a historical figure, or in a language class as a descriptive-vocabulary exercise. Teachers tend to use the blank template above so students do the layout as well as the content.

Making It Look Old

Most of the effect comes from four choices, and none of them needs design software:

• Paper color. A pale tan or cream background does more than anything else. In Word, use Design ? Page Color, or drop a parchment image behind the text with wrapping set to Behind Text.
• Fonts. Heavy slab-serif or Western display faces for the headline; a plain serif for the body. Two fonts maximum — period posters used a jumble of type, but reproducing that badly just looks messy.
• The photograph. Convert it to black and white or sepia: click the image, then Picture Format ? Color, and choose a greyscale or sepia recolor. A color phone photo on a parchment background undoes the whole effect.
• Physical aging. The most convincing trick isn’t digital — print it, then lightly brush cold tea or coffee over the paper and let it dry flat. Tear the edges rather than cutting them, and crumple it once before flattening. Five minutes, and it beats any filter.

Printing and Party Use

Print on cream or parchment-colored paper if you have it — 120 gsm or heavier holds up to being pinned and handled. For a party, a batch of posters featuring the guests makes both decoration and a talking point; print one per guest, mix real photographs with silly charges, and pin them around the room. As photo-booth props they work better mounted on card with a handle.

For classroom display, A4 is enough; for an event, print at A3 or have a few enlarged at a print shop, since the format rewards scale — a wanted poster you can read across a room is doing what wanted posters were designed to do.

One Thing to Avoid

These templates are for classroom work, parties, props, and novelty gifts. Two lines worth not crossing: don’t reproduce the seals, logos, or insignia of real law enforcement agencies, and don’t produce a poster designed to pass as a genuine official notice about a real person. A joke poster of a colleague pinned up in the office is fine; something that looks like an authentic police notice about someone is a different matter entirely — for them and potentially for you.

Keep it obviously Old West, obviously fictional, or obviously a joke, and there’s nothing to think about.

Frequently Asked Questions

What goes on a wanted poster?

A large WANTED headline, a portrait, the person’s name and aliases, what they’re wanted for, a physical description, where they were last seen, a reward amount, and a contact line. The headline and the reward should be the two biggest elements on the page.

How do I make a wanted poster in Word?

Start from one of the templates above, or build one: set a page color or parchment background, add a heavy display font for the headline, insert a photo with text wrapping set to Behind Text or Square, and use text boxes for the description and reward so you can position them freely.

How do I make a wanted poster for a school project?

Use the blank template and fill in name, aliases, physical description with a page reference, what the character is wanted for, known associates, last seen, and reward. Adding “approach with caution because…” pushes students toward inference rather than copying.

How do I make the paper look old?

Use a cream or tan background, convert the photograph to sepia or black and white, then print it and brush over cold tea or coffee. Tear the edges rather than cutting, and crumple it once before flattening.

What font should I use for a wanted poster?

A heavy slab-serif or Western display face for the headline and reward, with a plain serif for the body text. Keep it to two fonts — the authentic jumble of Victorian type is hard to reproduce well and usually just reads as cluttered.

Can I use a wanted poster template for a real missing person or pet?

For a missing pet, use a dedicated format instead — our missing pet poster templates have a clear photo area, contact details, and tear-off tabs. For a missing person, contact the police first; they will advise on appeals and any poster they want circulated.
